Cleveland Clinic adopted a unique labor and delivery initiative in October 2022, that led to a reduction in Cesarean section rates and a boost in patient satisfaction, as reported on July 1st by the Ohio based health system.
Developed by Ariadne Labs, a joint center for health systems innovation at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, TeamBirth was created in 2021.
This care delivery model focuses on routine check-ins and includes all members of a patient’s care team and family, using a whiteboard as a streamline communication tool about birth preferences and patient status.
As a result, the rate of C-sections for Black mothers went down from 41% to 22% and from 27% to 23% for white mothers.
Jennifer Savitski, MD, director of obstetrics and gynecology at Akron General, where the Cleveland Clinic piloted the method, stated in a release.”We have seen a marked improvement in outcomes and patient satisfaction scores since implementing TeamBirth, and we are excited to see it expanding to other Cleveland Clinic hospitals,”
Since 2022, the Cleveland Clinic registred 100% satisfaction went up across five categories: Friendliness/courtesy of the unit, Staff concern, information about progress and baby’s condition, Nurse promptness in responding to patient call, Nurses attitude toward patient requests, Doctor and staff working together during birth.
“TeamBirth ensures every person has a voice in their birth experience,” said Dr. Savitski.
Patient satisfaction grew by 23% since 2022, which is explained by how well they felt their pain was managed by Cleveland Clinic during labor.
