Twitter will warn users about electoral falsehoods

Twitter said on Monday that it will act proactively and alert its users to possible misinformation, anticipating false results announcements in the November 3 US elections.

The short messaging service said it would place notices at the top of users’ feeds, warning that there may be delays in full election results and that people may see “misleading information” about voting by mail, according to AFP.

This “pre-bunking” is part of an effort to stay ahead of unsubstantiated claims about the election before there are any official results, according to the Twitter platform’s head of site integrity, Yoel Roth.

“We’re introducing ‘pre-bunks’ for some of the most common misleading claims about #Election2020,” Roth tweeted.

“Research shows that staying ahead of misinformation is a powerful way to build resilience. Excited to see this application of inoculation theory in practice.

Online platforms have been betting on stemming a wave of unverified ads during the campaign, including President Donald Trump’s efforts to call into question the legitimacy of mail-in ballots.

Twitter has previously said it would remove tweets that encourage violence or call on people to interfere with election results or the operation of polling places.

It also said that candidates for office cannot announce an election victory before it is announced by an official and that premature announcements would be labeled with a link to the platform’s election page.
